Israel\u2019s budding cannabis industry has set its sights on expanding its manufacturing, production and export capabilities, as the country prepares to legalize recreational marijuana in the coming months.<\/span><\/div>\n

Hagit Weinstock is an attorney specializing in cannabis regulation who co-founded the Tel Aviv-based Weinstock-Zehavi & Co. law firm. She sits on a number of government committees that are working to move legalization efforts forward quickly.<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cI can see by the committees that I\u2019m part of that everyone is pushing that [legalization] will be done,\u201d Weinstock said. \u201cWe already have a draft [law].\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

According to the draft law, Israelis over the age of 21 will be allowed to use cannabis and to purchase it at designated stores. Smoking in public places, however, will be forbidden.<\/span><\/div>\n

Weinstock\u2019s firm is already working with dozens of Israeli and international companies and investors in the growing marijuana sector. Despite the instability of the current Israeli government \u2013 and talks of yet another round of elections \u2013 she believes that legalization will proceed as planned in the coming months.<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cBoth sides agree on this issue,\u201d Weinstock says. \u201cThey\u2019ve all signed a declaration that this will be an issue that they are going to support so we don\u2019t have dangers with this government or others.\u201dLast week, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein a regulatory amendment permitting the use of CBD (cannabidiol) \u2013 one of the key active ingredients of cannabis \u2013 in cosmetics and food products.
